When did I become interested in birds?
It was a long time ago when I was about 8 years old when I used to go out with Jock (my brother-in-law but he was more like a dad to me) and we would go for walks in the country and he taught me how to identify the wild birds and their nests and the colour of their eggs etc.
One day when we were out on our bikes we found a little bird lying in the middle of the road, it was still alive so I picked it up and using my scarf made a cosy nest for it in the basket on the front of my bike.
I was so pleased when I got home and found it was still alive, but when I opened up the scarf to let my dad see the bird it flew away and the surprise was it had laid an egg on the scarf in the basket on my bike.
I think after handling that tiny bird and when it looked up at me that was the moment my love of birds began.

This is my experience in hand rearing birds and hope it may help others if they have to do this.
The first thing I want to point out - this is what I believe - I would say only attempt hand rearing if the chick's life is in danger- i.e. if the parent birds die or if they stop feeding the chicks for some reason - please don't do it to get a tame bird - the parent birds will make a far better job of rearing their young themselves.
My most recent hand rearing experience was with a zebra finch called Shadow. This is Shadow's Story.
